Former Gov. Buddy Roemer suffered a "small stroke" about four weeks ago, but is back at work and recovering.

That's according to the former governor's son, Chas Roemer, who is president of the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Chas Roemer told the Baton Rouge Press Club Monday that his father is "doing quite well." He says the stroke caused weakness in his father's right hand and impacted his speech, but Chas Roemer says the doctors expect the former governor to make a full recovery.

Buddy Roemer, a Republican who is president of a Baton Rouge-based bank, served one term as governor from 1988 to 1992. Before that, he was a congressman from 1980 to 1988. He made an unsuccessful attempt at a third-party candidacy for president in 2012.
