Kenner officials have taken the first step toward construction of a new, modern food bank.

They broke ground Thursday at the site of the new facility in south Kenner, at Oxley Street and Lloyd Price Avenue.

The food bank has operated for years out of a former fire station on Worth Street.

Food Bank Director Arleeta Terrell tells 99.5 WRNO the new facility means they'll be better able to serve their clients and house more food.

"What it'll mean is for the first time a building that's basically been designed and built for the purpose of it serving as a food bank," Terrell said.

Terrell says construction is expected to be completed by late spring or early summer of next year.
