The Krewe of Alla is no longer an all-male Carnival organization. The krewe's board of directors has voted to lift the restriction and open its membership to women.
Krewe of Alla President Frank Borne tells 99.5 WRNO it was a decision supported by the group's male members.
"We had a lot of our members wanted their spouses or daughters, girlfriends to ride with them. It's much more fun if it's a couple oriented thing," Borne said.
Borne says Alla has about 200 members and with the change, they think they can raise membership to 500 by the upcoming Carnival season. The krewe has also installed its first female board member.
Alla was founded in Algiers. It parades on the St. Charles Avenue route on the first Sunday of Carnival and is the fifth-oldest parading organization in the New Orleans area.
