In his annual address on the state of the criminal justice system in Orleans Parish, District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro has assessed the system as "strong" and perhaps the strongest in modern history.

The DA delivered a 52 minute long speech in the Lower 9th Ward Tuesday night.

Cannizzaro announced that his office has been working with representatives of the Innocence Project to create a Conviction Integrity Unit that will review convictions that are questionable.  Details are expected to be announced next week.

The District Attorney says the new unit will review cases in which innocent people may have been convicted.

As qualifying for the November 4 elections begins, Cannizzaro has drawn an opponent.  The Advocate reports that former prosecutor Lon Burns has announced that he will enter the race.
