New Orleans Under Flash Flood Warning: Here's What To Do In An Emergency

A flash flood warning has been issued for several parishes around New Orleans after thunderstorms are expected to bring inches of rain into the area, according to WWL-TV. The National Weather Service issued the warning for parts of Orleans, Jefferson, and St. Bernard parishes on Tuesday (March 23).

While the risk for severe storms is low, rain is expected to continue falling through Thursday, with around 4-8 inches of rain leading to potential flooding in the streets. Ahead of this possibility, the City of New Orleans issued a reminder in the case of possible flash flooding, WDSU reports.

  • Avoid flood waters: Move to higher ground, don't walk or drive through flood waters, and abandon your car if water rises around it.
  • Report flooding: Call 911 to report street flooding or for life-threatening emergencies.
  • Avoid contact with electricity: Any source of electricity can be dangerous during and after a flood.
  • Move vehicles to higher ground: The city may suspend parking restrictions during the event of major flooding to allow residents an opportunity to move to higher ground.

After a flood, don't return home until authorities say it is safe to do so. Debris may linger in the area, so be wary of obstacles or eroded walkways. Additionally, stay clear of standing water as there may be downed power lines.
