Tropical Storm Imelda Forms In Gulf Before Texas Landfall

(NOTE: The map above was issued when the National Hurricane Center announced the formation of Tropical Depression Eleven at Noon Tuesday. The NHC has yet to issue an updated map for Tropical Storm Imelda.)

A low pressure system in the northwest Gulf of Mexico has organized itself into Tropical Storm Imelda about 40 miles southwest of Galveston, the National Hurricane Center announced Tuesday afternoon.

Maximum sustained winds were measured at 40 miles per hour. A tropical storm warning is in effect along the Texas coast from Sargent to Port Bolivar.

Imelda made landfall around 1 p.m. Tuesday near Freeport, Texas.

The NHC says the biggest threat from Imelda is life-threatening flash flooding for parts of the upper Texas coast, including the Houston and Galveston areas.
