For the first time in over three years, the historic Perley Thomas streetcars are running again on the full length of the St. Charles Avenue line.
The RTA says a construction project that began in early 2011 has entered its final stage and residents will see minor construction and clean-up work for another two weeks, but streetcar service has been restored on the entire route.
The project to replace old wooden cross-ties on the line was originally scheduled to be completed in about a year, but it was immediately plagued by a dispute with a contractor who walked off the job.
The project also proved to be more complicated than originally anticipated and it was delayed by weather-related problems.
Since construction began, riders had to transfer to buses on parts of the line between Canal Street and Carrollton Avenue.
