Imelda Expected Soon, Humberto A Major Hurricane

A strong weather system that could become Tropical Storm Imelda soon is expected to bring flooding to the Southeast.

The National Hurricane Center upgraded it to the ninth tropical depression of the season Saturday morning, and warns it could become a named storm by early Sunday when it impacts the Bahamas.

Computer models show the storm heading towards the Carolinas and gaining strength as it nears the coast.

Forecasters say the storm could be felt in the Southeast as soon as Monday, with storm conditions possible from the coast of Georgia to North Carolina. The governor of South Carolina has issued a state of emergency.

To the east of Tropical Depression Nine, Humberto was a major category four hurricane with winds of 145 miles per hour.

The NHC says Humberto could bring dangerous surf conditions for Caribbean and Bermuda shores later this weekend.

There is no threat to the Gulf Coast from either system.
